Learn How to Register Domain Name and Host your Website

Submitted by admin on Wednesday, 4 November 20099 Comments

Windows 7 Released in IndiaDomain name registration and to host a website is not as complicated as you might think. My friends surprised when they came to know that I own domain and my own website, their expression are “that’s great yar !! I also want to register a domain but I don’t know how to do so”. Suddenly I thought to write an article that can help people to learn how to register a domain and host it on live server.

The best things to registered a domain is to find a reliable domain registrar that is an official internet registering service and use this to registered the name. Here you can find various domain registrar reviews at namepros.com forum.

How search for domain names:

You can register any domain name as long as it is not already taken by someone else. You must be thinking that how to check whether the domain name is available or already registered by some one?
Visit http://www.whois.org and search for the name which you want to registered. There will be various options available for domain extensions. Here is the brief on various domain extensions available for specific purpose:

.com represents the word “commercial,” and is the most widely used extension in the world. Most businesses prefer a .com domain name because it is a highly recognized symbol for having a business presence on the Internet.

.net represents the word “network,” and is most commonly used by Internet service providers, Web-hosting companies or other businesses that are directly involved in the infrastructure of the Internet. Additionally, some businesses choose domain names with a .net extension for their intranet Websites.

.org represents the word “organization,” and is primarily used by non-profits groups or trade associations.

.biz is used for small business Web sites.

.info is for credible resource Web sites and signifies a “resource” web site. It’s the most popular extension beyond .com, .net and .org.

.mobi (short for “mobile”) is reserved for Web sites built for easy viewing on mobile devices.
Find more details about extensions here at learn about domain name extensions.

Once you search for the domain which is free, go to authorized domain registrar and create account with them. Usually I prefer namecheap and godaddy to register the domain. Once account has been created, you can register the domain through your account. The prices vary among the different ones but typically start at around $5.00 for a one year registration. They can go as high as $50 so finding the one that offers the best price can take some investigative work.

When you are ready to register the name, you will be required to provide either a PayPal account or a credit card to pay for it. This is not optional. Most all providers require this method of payment. On the plus side by paying using this method you can immediately have access to the name. Once you complete the registration process, the domain will be transferred to your account immediately.

We won half of the battle as we have completed half process, now we need to host the website on live server. Confused!! it is something like, we have registered the name of our business but we need place where we can start the business. You domain name is just a name of your website but you need some space where you can host the data that will be displayed at your website.

Go for any web hosting company and select the server as per your requirement (windows server, linux server etc) and select the plan that best suited your requirement. Once you create account with them, you will given name server that will looks like ns1.domainname.com, ns2.domainname.com.

Once you get name server, access your domain registrar account and change domain name server to that one which is provided by your web hosting company. It will take 24 to 48 hours to reflect the name server.

It’s done, now you can upload your files at web hosting server using any ftp services. Now write your domain name in browser, your website will start displaying the data which is uploaded at your server.

I am sure; you learned something new today, feel free to contact me if you need any help in registering domain or hosting your website at web server.

    sir,
want to know that wether we get domain control panel username and password only after the hoasting or we can get them even before, as soon as our site is registered.

    please help

    Hi Praveen,
you can get domain control panel before getting hosting, let me explain how:
lets say, you have registered your domain with namecheap.com, you can manage entire domain related functionality from the account with that domain registrar. Few functionality like, domain forwarding, domain parking, domain transfer, domain name server setting etc…

now, when you buy hosting from other person, you will given nameserver and hosting cpanel from which you can manage hosting related activities like email accounts, ftp accounts, addon domains etc…

you only need to edit name server by your domain registrar account and your website will start running withing 1 to 24 hours.

Godaddy is really reputed company but i do not prefer Godaddy due to confusing website usability. I am happy with namecheap and name.com they are very simple and providing same facilities like godaddy.
